By the time of their second album the group was defined to eight or so members, looking just lovely in their mod 60s clothing, crosses and peace signs. Ride On contains God Unlimiteds loudest song: the seven-minute title track. Its a driving hard rock depiction of the crowds mocking Jesus, with lengthy solos for fuzzed guitar, drums and saxophone. Do You Want To Be Free and Universal Rhythm also have good bits of electric guitar soloing amidst the tempo changes. Many fine moody atmospheric pieces: soft psychy guitars enhance the hypnotic Clouds Spinning (which includes a reference to MacArthur Park); a solemn recorder gives Black The Night the enchantment of a distant foghorn on a calm night. Jans Song is an intensely mournful slow bluesy piece that passionately sung cry of God damn those men who killed my son! certainly perks up the ears, the context being that of empathizing with a woman whos lost her child in a war. Many consider this to be the groups best album. (Ken Scott - Archivist - Heavenly Grooves Blog)

  • @frtubr I was a member (one of the high school girls, barely...I was 13), I toured with the group but I wasn't on the album. My name's Chris, I played the 12 string and a piano/sax solo w/ Father Tom when we were on tour....good memories

  • I love this song! This was a great band with pretty cool sound.

  • I think it was also released on 8 track. Good luck finding a copy.

  • This is where I get the urge to tap on thing from...Nice! Good genetics.

  • Correction- several of us were in High school (including me- the drummer). Someone just showed me this post. To answer the question of why only vinyl- that's all there was back in 1969. In the context of time, several of us are now nearing retirement age...

  • Whoever posted this- thanks! I was the drummer with G.U. Except for the leader (Tom Belt, an Episcopal priest & the composer & sax) the rest of us were college students. Several of us went on into ministry.
