Video highlights of our trip to the ancient temple ruins of Chichen Itza in Mexico.
First we take a dip in the sacred Cenote Ik-Kil which is 130ft deep! Yup! That's right... even me... mr fearty of water went in (albeit with a life jacket). A bit scary when you can't see the bottom of this huge sink hole... but it's amazing when you're there paddling around with all the fish, jungle vines hanging from the vegetation at the top. A very refreshing break from the heat.
Then off to see the temple ruins at Chichen Itza. This was amazing and we really enjoyed learning about this ancient Mayan civilization and their interests of astronomy and the calendar.
A real shame that you're no longer allowed to climb the temples though.
There are no rivers above ground in Yucatan Peninsula, so all rivers are underground. Being porous, caverns and caves formed where the fresh water collects -- hence the cenotes or water sinkholes. The water that gathers in these subterranean cenotes is a crystal clear turquoise colour.
