William Shakespeare's sonnet 43

SONNET 43
When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see,
For all the day they view things unrespected;
But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee,
And darkly bright are bright in dark directed.
Then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright,
How would thy shadow's form form happy show
To the clear day with thy much clearer light,
When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so!
How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed made
By looking on thee in the living day,
When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade
Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay!
All days are nights to see till I see thee,
And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.

  • Cont'd: How much, then, would it delight me to see you in reality, when already your image in my dreams makes them so bright? Until I can see you again, my days are as dark as night because of your absence, and my nights as bright as day because of your sight in my dreams.

  • Cont'd: How much, then, would it delight me to see you in reality, when already your image in my dreams makes them so bright? Until I can see you again, my days are as dark as night because of your absence, and my nights as bright as day because of your sight in my dreams.

  • PARAPHRASE: I see best when my eyes are closed. All day I am forced to look on what I do not care about; only at night, when my dreaming eyes see you, do I truly see. For even your image (ie, shadow) brightens all the shadows of a dream, and how much brighter you are in daylight, when you may be seen in reality?

  • Thank you.

I've just recited this to my gf's voicemail. Your beautiful reading helped me.

  • thanks

  • Hope that helps. I guess there will be someone out there who will tell me my interpretation is wrong but that's my humble actor's take on it !

  • This is Alison, I read the sonnet. He is away from his love, when his eyes are shut he sees best for there is much to distract the mind's eye in the day,in sleep come dreams so real they are brighter than daytime. How would his eyes be more pleased to see the lover in the day? At night the dream of the lover is there,no interruption, all night long. So days feel like barren nights because the lovers are apart, but nights have become like bright happy days cos they bring his love in dreams
