A record-breaking snowstorm proves a challenge, but creates the Countys first white Christmas in recent memory. Meantime, eleven business are recognized for going green, and the Countys Volunteer Center gets help from A Wider Circle and others to make the holidays brighter, for families in need.

Thanks for watching County Report. Im Alisa Parenti. We start with the blizzard that closed the area down for several days and made it into the record books for the biggest snowfall in December, ever.

Two feet of snow fully 24 inches-- proved to be a game-changer, closing schools, libraries and rec centers. Snow removal crews concentrated their efforts on more than 4-thousand miles of neighborhood roads and almost one thousand miles of primary streets.

While it proved to be a white Christmas, eleven businesses are being recognized for going green.

A partnership between the Chamber of Commerce and the Countys Department of Environmental Protection has helped a number of organizations voluntarily work to conserve energy and water, reduce their carbon footprint, and increase recycling.
Bethesda-based Honest Tea was one of the companies recognized for its extraordinarily green efforts.

Going green has saved the companies money, given them a marketing edge and provided a healthier environment for their employees.

The Montgomery County Volunteer Center has been busy working with a number of churches, synagogues and other organizations to help families in need during the holidays.

And that need has never been greater. Volunteers at A Wider Circle in Silver Spring are excited to meet the challenge. Nicole Newman says she feels like one of Santas elves.

The organization provides services all year long, but during the holiday season, it is particularly busy trying to help families in parts of Montgomery County and the District.
