Lou Glazier, President of Michigan Future, talks about why per capita income is the best indicator of economic prosperity rather than the more typical metric of low unemployment. He compares Alabama to Minnesota, both with the same unemployment rates, but with Minnesota having significantly higher per capita income and lower poverty rates. As Michigan strives to transform its economy, Minnesota should be the goal, which means higher concentrations of high-pay knowledge-based jobs.
