i always thought this song was about coming out of your shell, doing things differently, becoming a new person. rather than it being about gay people coming out of the closet, which btw is very courageous, and I had always thought that this song was adopted by gay folk to say how great it is to come out. Either way this is such a great song.

@ArtizFox Wahey, someone else who's my age and loves 80s music! :D I wish I was born in the 80s so badly, the music we have nowadays is utter shite, and we have to put up with Justin Bieber and N-Dubz.

Ha! I never paid attention to the lyrics or anything, had no idea it was that "coming out". Fun song regardless.

Apparently this song was inspired by the writer Nile Rodgers when he saw some drag queens impersonating Diana Ross to the max, but it also has a double meaning since Diana Ross had just left the iron grip of Mowtown producer Berry Gordy and this was her "coming out" song after leaving him. Any way you look at it (as songs can be interpreted in endless ways depending on the many listeners), it's got a groovy funk guitar riff and is just plain fun.

This song was actually inspired by 3 drag queens who dressed themselves up as Diana Ross
