As President-elect Barack Obama prepares to enter office on Jan. 20, much of his focus has been directed toward the many national security and foreign policy issues that await him in the Oval Office. The list spans the globe, but has a heavy concentration in the volatile Middle East.

At this Dec. 16 New America event, held at the Core Club in New York City, foreign policy experts and New America Foundation Board members Fareed Zakaria and Anne-Marie Slaughter explored the ways in which they think the Obama administration will differ from the Bush presidency. Slaughter, dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, and Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International, offered their expertise on Iraq; Afghanistan; Iran; Pakistan and India; Israel and Palestine; Russia; China; and more. A robust discussion followed, focusing on what they thought Obama's policy priorities would be.

  • Cannot understand the previous comments. Unbelievable. Zakaria is a genious who should be listened very carefully, if America (and West) still wants to stay in the game after 30 years.

  • 1:29:15 captures what intrigues me about Zakaria. He speaks (and writes) "truth to power" without apparently fearing the long-term consequences (future Secretary of State?). I am glad that he does this though, it's great to have someone with this much inside knowledge and analysis on our side.

  • @41.00--in the case of the strategy in the af/pak region united states have always playd in the hands of the pakis wer they have a pact wer the pakis armd forces would be giving the strike coordinates and thus by killing the baluch people/revolutionaries,.and also by financing and giving weapons by not conforming to the end use certification....as compared to india's to certify each and every weapons fr end use certification....

  • @ 33.22---well i think that in the case of iran as fareed sd the paranoia generated by the united states fr literally blowing things outta proportion, its done in the past and i am worried that it would do in the case of N.Korea and iran....listen is somthing i would suggest the american's and above all the obama admin to do...

  • How can a group of people that have gotten so many degrees be so stupid. The solutions that you propose would only work in an ivory tower -- never in the real world.
