In this example, I'm using the infamous Mellotron flutes. I couldn't resist playing the infamous "Strawberry Fields" opening. The next tune is a flute solo from "Supper's Ready" (to show how this sound differs from a real flute), and then I launch into some improvisation.

I left all the effects off this time, in hopes of invoking that magical, dry sound from the Beatles song. The only thing I did to the sound was turn the Tone wheel fully clockwise. The flutes are definitely a wonderful sound, if not a bit dated and tainted by overuse.

I'm very interested in feedback, so feel free to make comments/suggestions on these videos!

  • You forgot the end of the strawberry intro..

Has it got a very large pitch control like the real one??

or it's got a pitch of a half tone like the most one..

  • The range is slightly more than a half tone in each direction, which is definitely much smaller than the real thing and which makes doing an "authentic" rendition of the intro impossible.

  • The Beatles apparently turned the Pitch Knob all the way down on SFF.

  • I've heard this before, actually, and upon testing it out (a while after I made this video), I found that the tone was even more accurate than with the knob dead center.

  • i'd like to know what kind of midi keyboard you're using... how many keys??

  • Almost everyone raves about the accuracy of the sound, but it's not quite the same.

However, unless you are rich and very strong, the M-Tron is a lot better than no Mellotron at all.

  • Don' like the sound. Not even close. Sounds too plastic.

    Great playing though ;)

  • oh it's a shame..what the fuck were they thinking about?!...the only good thing of the mellotron is the great pitch adjustment..!!

  • Oh wonderful - I think this patch is worth the ticket price alone

I hope to date, taint and overuse them myself very soon ;)

  • Love the Genesis Mellotron! Suppers ready is one of my favorite compositions. Too bad Banks has no interest in that kind if sound anymore, he was my favorite back then and now seems to only do cheezy Pop music.

  • My band Ivory Forest needs a Keyboardist. I have been doing it all on my own so far guitars and keyboards, and I like your style. Check us out on myspace. Look up Ivory Forest, you wont miss us on the list....

  • i like it, but is there a way for the m-tron to change the attack to be more gradual like on the beatles recording, or would you have to do that on the eq? could the original mellotrons even do that, or was that some sort of production thing?
