4 million views for an old codger giving a lecture about arithmetic?? What's going on? You'll just have to watch to see what's so damn amazing about what he (Albert Bartlett) has to say.

I introduce this video to my students as "Perhaps the most boring video you'll ever see, and definitely the most important." But then again, after watching it most said that if you followed along with what the presenter (a professor emeritus of Physics at Univ of Colorado-Boulder) is saying, it's quite easy to pay attention, because it is so damn compelling.

  • I have never understood how people make the leap from "there is no god" to "there is no reason to have compassion for others." There are many people who simply enjoy acting kindly to others, or intellectually understand that helping others is beneficial for all. Religion is NO WAY necessary for moral behavior, unless you believe people will only do something good for a heavenly reward, or to avoid hell. In which case they are not really acting out of compassion for others but self-interest.

  • I believe your interpretation of entropy is somewhat misleading. It's not even a problem in the Sun-Earth ecosystem because just about all of the energy that can be used on the Earth ultimately comes from the Sun. So as long as the Sun keeps shining at roughly the same intensity it is now, we are good to go. As for entropy I prefer to look at it as kind of guide to energy flow. Always naturally flowing from more to less.It doesn't necessarily become useless when it gets there.

  • What about MEANING ... ??? If our existence has NO MEANING than your treatment of others has NO MEANING. It's our search for MEANING that gives rise to our Philosophies and Religions. Every normal, healthy person has a Religion. A person's Religion is the set of core values/beliefs by which that person gives the MEANING to his/her Life and Realities.

  • Exponential Function.... What's your function?

  • ahh....the good 90's

  • Dude, this is 2012. These videos are from the 1990s. You're talking about what's happening nowadays, so he couldn't have predicted with that much precision. And didn't he say *precisely* that if we if we didn't come up with solutions then we would instead be subjected to them? You're basically saying he was right! And wtf are you talking about "he is physicist"? How does anything here show he's not read in economics? You are simply prejudiced towards "hard" scientists. Grow up before you brag.

  • I 'like' this video within 4 minutes of watching it.. it is THAT good!...

  • While your first statement about energy is correct, we can easily get a ourselfs an energy crisis, because of the phenomenon called "entropy". Entropy is a tough nut to crack, but suffice it to say that the second law of thermodynamics tells us, that in a closed system the amount of useless energy will(statistically) always increase. So true, energy will not disapear but as it moves toward equilibrium it gets our of our reach, in other words useless.

  • You make your own reason - no god necessary.

  • 6:60 yes professor that's .... allot of ... wheat. Fuck are you talking about?

  • All these lectures are ultimately as boring as they seem. The Universe is created out of energy so there can never be an "energy crisis" The planet is 75% water so any " water shortage" is an easily solvable problem. The reason " economic growth" is pushed so much is because the monetary system is based on debt. Without "economic growth" the money to payback the outstanding debt that is currently due would not be available. Collapse of this system is unavoidable but it's only money.
