Gray Lady Down - Sinking

In this 1978 disaster film the US submarine U.S.S. Neptune is returning to base, when in a dense fog it collides with a Norwegian freighter. The submarine sinks and lands on a ledge below its crush depth.

The captain waited too long to blow the tanks. If he would of blown his tanks at 100 feet they might of made it to the surface before they took on too much water.

The freighter was probably too close to be avoided even with an emergency dive. At least that's my guess.

This movie was released on March 10, 1978, almost ten years after the U.S. Navy's last maritime disaster, which was the loss of the Skipjack-class nuclear attack sub USS Scorpion on May 22, 1968. Unfortunately, there would be another maritime sinking, this time involving the U.S. Coast Guard, when the USCGC Blackthorn was accidentally sunk on January 28, 1980, by the tanker SS Capricorn.

The minute the guy announced that there was a ship ahead, I would have turned on the foglights at full power and let out the signal. He should've warned the ship that they were getting too close.

USN nuclear submarines don't perform "emergency deeps" or "crash dives" from the surface. They are capable of diving in a hurry but, they're usually planned dives.
