City is a science fiction novel by one of my favorite authors, Clifford D. Simak, who was quite big in the genre in the 1950s. Though many would not consider him that great now, he influenced me when I was younger, so I continue to hold a special place for him, and especially this novel, in my heart. City is considered his best work, though it really is a collection of related stories, and Way Station, and A Choice of Gods by him are also enjoyable. Be wary though of most written after around 1975, as he went downhill in the years before his death. The book was originally published in 1952, and though the first editions can be worth a considerable amount, it has been reprinted several times and can be found quite easily.

  • Sorry Pal but you don´t know nothing about Simak and his novel City...

  • How do you mean?

  • I love these book reviews and that sounds great!

I think I might do "The Word For World is Forest" by Ursula K LeGuin

  • Thanks. I read my first book by Ursula K. LeGuin just a few months ago, "The Left Hand of Darkness," and it was a damn good book, so I'll definitely check out that one.

  • Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try to get my hands on it. Seems like an easy read.

  • For the price and availability, it's a great one to pick up.

  • less of a review and more of a general recommendation.

  • great review!

  • reading "The World That Couldn't Be" now. it's amazing.

also i disagree with your statement - "Though many would not consider him that great now".

  • @Klaidux123 think so too

  • The first book I ever read by Simak was A Choice of Gods, which seems similar to City, but City definitely is superior in writing. You are right. His books after the 70s kind of lost their edge.

I think writers like Arthur C. Clark, Poul Anderson and Heinlein weren't half as talented as the soft sci-fi writers like Robert Silverberg, Ray Bradbury, and Simak. I found their works more literary and enjoyable to read.

  • Special Deleverance thats a great simak book.

  • It is a wondeful novel, thanks for the review.

  • Your taste in science fiction is commendable. Clifford D. Simak has always appealed to me. His stories soothe me and take me on a magic carpet ride through space and time. I love "Huddling Place". Keep up the good reading!

  • It's nice to meet another fan. My brother and I really like his work XD
