QRS 1017 - You Can't Get Lovin' Where There Ain't Any Love - Fox Trot - Played by J. Russel Robinson on my 1912 Stroud Metrostyle-Themodist player piano. This song was co-written with the great W. E. Skidmore. I'm a BIG fan of J. Russel Robinson, in my opinion one of the hottest roll artists QRS had on staff. Once called "the white boy with colored fingers", Robinson was indeed a white musician, but you'd practically never know that listening to his rolls and his style is definitely "hot" and unique. Interestingly enough, Marion Harris made a great recording of this, along with another song that J. Russel Robinson did a hot performance of, "Never let no one man worry your mind". I first heard the Marion Harris record and I knew I had to have this roll (knowing how Robinson would play it)! I recorded the video with a digital camera and spliced in the audio via a simultaneous computer recording. You'll notice my finger makes a cameo appearance here (LOL!), thanks to some feathering on the beggining left edge of the roll (not my doing), so I had to manually track it for a bit. Thanks for listening!

  • I have the song by the Louisiana Five and a short chorus by Billy Murray on a Columbia from 1919. This is excellent, but the recorded version is at a faster tempo. Nevertheless, 6/5!!!!

  • @AAErikCO Good job! I would be interested in knowing what cloth you used and where you got it. Thanks JIM

  • Rebuilt the pump and it gets 35 seconds :D I'm happy as a clam and it makes pumping a bit more leisurely! Now I just need the time to post a few more vids lol.

  • Fantastic performance! You picked a GREAT tempo for this one!!!

certain parts, such as from 2:28 to 2:34, have obviously had extra notes added by the editor (notice how the melody is played in THREE OCTAVES at once, while the regular low bass continues in the left hand!).

However, having heard audio recordings of Robinson actually playing (as well as Clarence Jones, who had a similar style) I have no doubt that he could definitely have played all the rest himself.
