In this video, which is part of a larger interview, retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Carl Jewett, now executive director of the Veterans Assistance Network, explains how organizations like the Mesothelioma Center are established to help veterans who were exposed to asbestos in the military. If veterans know they were exposed to asbestos while serving in the military, veterans may gain VA benefits for healthcare or for disabilities.
Jewett explains that individuals who served in various branches of the military and were exposed to asbestos while serving can find help through resources that focus on mesothelioma veterans. He says veterans may perceive the benefits claims process as complicated, but perception is not reality. In fact, he says, the process simple. The key is for veterans to understand what information is required by the VA. For Navy asbestos claims, for example, veterans can receive instructions that they misinterpret. With help from organizations like the Mesothelioma Center, those instructions can be quite specific, such as: "fill out this form," "write this summary," and "bring your DD214 form."
By following specific steps and filing the required documents, Jewett says, veterans pursuing asbestos claims can find out what they are eligible for, how they can best receive the requested benefits and where they can find more information.

He continues by stating that veterans from all 50 states and around the world have been helped with asbestos-related claims. Veterans who live abroad who already have received help include those living in Australia, Guam and Canada, among other countries. However, Jewett says, the focus is to find assistance at a local level. Providing veterans with a point-of-contact who can help them manage all their claims, concerns and questions is more beneficial. This often includes finding local veterans service officers (VSO) to help veterans complete their paperwork. These VSOs eventually become the designated representative for that veteran.
As an expert on veterans asbestos exposure issues and veterans claims for asbestos-related diseases, Jewett is confident that all the resources that a veteran could need to receive assistance is available to them once they seek out help from organizations like the Mesothelioma Center.
