Here's a video I just made for The Last's song "She Don't Know Why I'm Here." Its a montage of footage spanning 20 years, coming from 6 different shows -- mainly from a 1981 gig at The Whisky (where the tempo matches the record almost perfectly). The brief grainy black & white moment is from a 1980 Starwood show; the one with the cameraman filming right next to Mike is from Stockage 2002; former Brady Robbie Rist can be seen drumming during a 2002 IPO show; you can't miss Ed Urlik's bald head as he thrashes around at the Roxy in 1995; and Joe & David are sporting sports jackets during a 1987 reunion show at Club Lingerie.

The sound track is taken from the band's self-produced and self-released first single (released on their own Backlash Records label). The song is played at varius tempos in these videos, making the synch work a bit difficult. The 1980 Starwood show was the slowest played and the 2002 IPO show was the "thrashiest"...

She Don't Know Why I'm Here

Yeah!
See that girl with the raven hair
I wish she were mine, but she don't care 'cause
She don't know why I'm here

So many others and just the same
They all come out 'cause it's part of the game, but
That's only when they're here

Take a look around and you'll see what I mean
It never could have been ten years ago
The answer should be plain when you stumble back again
They never felt the kind of pain
The real world brings

See that girl with the soft blue eyes
They never seem to close or show surprise but
They don't believe they're here

She's looking at me, but I don't know
If I look back she'll run on home 'cause
She don't know why she's here...

This one's for you
You modified petrified hypocrites
God! To raise your children like goldfish
In plastic naugahyde cells

Are you coming out baby?
Who'll be my baby?
No!

  • This reminds me yet again why The Last were and will always be one of the BEST bands to come out of L.A. - of any era!

  • I just bought the CD on Amazon...I saw this band in 1981 and fell in love with them. I still have the LA Explosion album, but no turn table to play it on....LOL.

  • Thanks for the video; this was one of the bands that openned my eyes to what was out there beyond the opinions and choices of the corporate A&R toadies. I completely agree with hinodecho69; as I tell my 2 of my daughters who listen to all this thug crap: I'm not old, your music just sucks. The Vex, Masque, Madam Wong's, later the Cuckoos Nest, it was all about the music, not a style or uniform. For an Orange County kid right out of high school ('76) it was life changing.

  • A little note for you kiddies. In 1979-1980 you could have your choice of 2 or 3 shows just about every Friday or Saturday night, featuring bands of the caliber The Last - in other words, better than 99.9% of the crap pumped into your little skulls today. These were people who weren't geared around ego, or the need to project some cartoonified image of "thug culture" - just a bunch of young people with their own vision of what popular music should sound like. FWIW...

  • REMEMBER 20 YEAR A GO,,,,,YOUNG HIMNO....RIFFF...OH YEAH........Mr NOBODY

  • Sweet!

  • Isn't it about time for another reunion gig? LET'S GO!!!!!
