Cotton Tree News represents a unique approach to media in a post-conflict environment. It is the first time that a global nonprofit has partnered with a major university in West Africa to transform a campus radio station into a national training center for media excellence, and in the process successfully address a critical information gap in the country. Professional, balanced and relevant news and information programmes are produced daily in English, Krio, Mende, Temne and Limba and broadcast over the UN Radio and via satellite to community radio stations in Makeni, Pujehun, Bumbuna, Kailahun, Bo, Kambia, Tombo, Kabala, Bonthe and Moyamba. A daily broadcast of news on Shortwave reaches remote border areas that are often outside FM reach. CTN is the only media to broadcast on shortwave in Sierra Leone. It is managed by Fondation Hirondelle in partnership with Fourah Bay College.
