@griffontwosix26 It's a rotary telephone. It's somewhat like todays house phones (does the same job) except it uses a different method of dialing a phone number.
These were common place in almost every North American home during the 30s-60s.
Strings of clicks are sent along the phone line for each digit. Click-click-click-click. Each click physically moves a rotary selector switch one step across 10 selector points, at the phone central office. Each digit moves a different rotary selector.
Clicks for each digit are sent when you RELEASE the dial, and click speed is regulated by a spring and governor inside the phone's dial mechanism.
(Speed governor on this dial sounds uneven, needs adjustment.)
I still have and use my rotary telephone.
