Right now there is a pivotal bill in the California Senate that would ban shark fins from the entire state. Currently sharks are being finned primarily for the value of their fins which are then used in a soup symbolizing celebration and success. This bill will not only help by preventing interstate fin sales, but it will influence the entire market thought the Americas because California is the port of choice for the fin trade. Forcing finners to use other ports will make this wasteful practice much less profitable and therefore less appealing.

  • Do not despair my friends, from the best of my knowledge, shark fin soup in San Francisco is BANNED FOREVER!!!! YES!!! JUSTICE FOR THE SHARKS HAS BEEN SERVED ON AN ICE COLD DISH TO THOSE BLASTED ASIANS!

  • Save the shark, leave Paul Fong and the fins at sea !

On another word, you can save the whole shark for whatever you want, but you have to dump the fins, according to AB376 bill.

Again, poor Chinese are blamed for the crimes happen over another end of the world

  • To change the culture of China is the hardest task, even if only one culture of eating shark fin soup, because they have the largest population in the world (there are billions of them). Let us UNITE in the effort, continuous, and do NOT DESPAIR for the sustainability of our nature

  • @SharkRetriver Some small islands like the maledives and palau and other small islands are passing ever more laws against finning. The president of such a small island state has spoken against finning at an UN summit.

For those islands a dead shark is worth 500$ but a living one about 2.000.000$ thanks to diving tourism and the value of sharks for the eco system.

But all the large asian countries do their best to protect the current anarchy in global fishing.

  • goodluck with swaying the senators minds guys and hope the bill passes which would mean the whole west coast of the USA would have banned finning along with Hawaii and Guam. This would be a major boost to saving sharks.

  • Fact, animals have to survive against predators, we have to survive against ourselves (wars, crimes, pollution, all that.) This is pathetic.

Altho nice, US is now gonna decrease in rate of finning, but can anyone tell me what status is in Asia right now?
