Ben Runkel performing the world premiere of Ben Wahlund's "Murakami's Empty Chair" at Northern Illinois University on April 27th, 2008. This piece was commissioned by Runkel and was written for 4 stones, 4 wooden bowls (I found a great set of plates that worked), 4 concert toms, pedal bass drum, pedal stone, and tam tam.

I mean, Keith Jarret could improvise complex compositional structures, no doubt buzzed, but come on...

sharing idioms with improvisatory styles doesn't, or at least shouldn't denigrate a piece.

  • Drink two glasses of dry red wine and seat yourself at the battery of percussion. Now simply put your mind to it and improvise. The result should be a similar one. Try it!!

  • This piece is awesome! Has it been published anywhere that I can buy it. I can't find it and would love to try it for a recital.

  • Very nice!! Very well
