heres some footage of my new Sony 7600GR. this is aparently a 2001 model which is now discontinued.mmm .. (just how old is this radio ?)
anyhow .. i recon the sony takes some beating. i would also say for the majority of the time the sony also matches up to the Yaesu easy.
remember the sony works on its own aerial.
--
i dont think the sensitivity of the sony is as good as some portables ... but with a bit of wire it performs very good. the cross mod is good .. & by the way .. this NEW "GR" model has a MUCH better narrow filter in SSB mode. also .. wait theres more .. the sony still has that CRAP step tuning .. but it does work better than the old system.
---
IF the sony GR was the same as the old 1996 D model .. i would have slagged it off. i think the new GR model is fair compared to a proper HF rig !!! which shows up a expensive rig.
---
now lets talk about the Tecsun PL-600 v Sony 7600GR.
Ive been waiting since December 2007 for a PL600 to be sold on ebay.
May 2008 at last there are some. well i bought 2. the Tecsun is very good & lots of fun. its best on VHF without ANY doubt! even beats the sony easily ...
i cant compare it to the DE1113 .. so i wont.
im not going to go on ... so my verdict.
if u want a cheeeep radio to take to the beach .. or lets put it another way .. if u aint that bothered about radio then buy a tecsun.
maybee they will sort out those minor niggles in the future.
For me id buy the Sony everytime. nuff said.

I also recently bought the R20, BUT I can't figure out how to use it!

  • No offense, I own one by myself, but the sony 7600gr is a weak receicer. Why?

poor intermodulation immunity, many ghost stations even with it's telescope antenna. there is no scroll wheel, the scanning is very slow, no illuminated keys, small display, very bad speaker, the sync-tune is just a gimmick.

Good portable Radios: Panasonic RF-B65 or Sony 2001D

  • Sorry for the wait o n the reponse. The Sony is around 120$ but its an excellent radio. and for the size you want its a good choice but if you want an even smaller radio the g6 is the way to go as it one of the few ultra portable with SSB modes

  • hi and thanks again for your reply!

i want a portable radio (aprox 20cm x 12cm) in the price range of less than $100. I've been doing my research and so far I've noticed that Tecsun radios are good options but I'm eager to hear to your advice.

Also Id like it to have clock + alarm for my travels and of course, a good FM/SW reception. SW is the feature I like most as makes me remember the good old years...

    Thank you.

  • you put some good options out there but i need a few more details like how big do u want it and your price range. I will find you a good radio for you but you need to give me some more info

  • see thats a bit of a tighter options. no i found the g6 a normaly 120 dollar radio for 60 during black friday but a good option if you dont mind a big one is the grundigs s350 deluxe its a bit big though give me a few more thing you want in your radio and i may be able to narrow down your options

  • hi staniz4. i want to take advantage of your knowledge too :)

i'm basically looking for a good SW radio in the range of $50-$100 dollars.

    Thank you pal! ;)

  • Thank you very much. I'm actually trying to replace my very old Radio Shack DX-350.

I'm not that techie or into Dxing...yet. What I'm looking for is a radio with good shortwave reception/sensitivity and of course a good FM reception.

Ive been reading reviews lately and found good ones on PL-600, PL-310 & Sony 7600.

There are some features like ETM or ATS, memory banks, etc. that can be useful for me and my travels to other countries.

Thanks again in advance for your help.

  • Well the g6 is alot smaller and very sensitive hut the sony is more powerful. tell me what you want in a radio i may be able to help you out
