Mike is the MAN! A sense of timing like no other and the ability to understand what the music needs, not what the drummer wants. An incredible musician who also is not afraid to deal one on one with the public.

You can easily go wrong while improvising, actually. Mike just doesn't. Firstly, you can go wrong at a strictly technical level. And in the case of this song, you can go wrong stylistically too, because the whole point of Portnoy's soloisms at the end of Finally Free is to raise the tension, and that has to happen all by himself, as the other instruments play the same thing over and over, they don't build up anything. And he obviously succeeds. Brilliantly.
