I have a comparison of two great guitar strings, uncoated John Pearse strings and coated D'Addario EXP 80/20's. I kept the mic in the same exact position with the same exact settings and sat in the same way to help get an understanding of the sound produced by each. I know which I like best!

  • The uncoated strings are far nicer. The guitar sounds thinner because of the coating. I have Elixir coated strings on my Tanglewood and I can't wait for them to wear out so that I can replace them with Martin's or Newton's.

I'm assuming that is a Gibson J45. Aren't they wonderful guitars ? In my view they can't be beaten.

    Nice playing too.

  • @40173k I think the coated sound is a little thinner on this recording, but in person it definitely helps with projection. The uncoated tends to get lost in groups of other instruments, but is a little less bright when playing alone. To each their own.

it is actually the advanced jumbo model. The j-45 is great as well, and I recommend you trying an AJ if you get the chance.

  • wat song are you playing?

  • @yourmomwasherelol most of it is random chords and fingerpicking to get a lot of sound variations, some of the songs are I do play are "somebody more like you" by Nickel Creek, and the other is Snow by the Chili Peppers

  • The coated wins! They retain their bass response while remaining clearer than the non coated. People?

  • @brianjbeatty Yes. Different strings for different applications. I tend to play unaccompanied.

  • @timbov123 yeah both videos show brand new strings, so that may be the reason

  • @aceejay it's the MXL set from MF. Pretty inexpensive, but they sound decent for a little $

  • @aznballa1229 I use nothing but elixir on my electrics, they are the best I've ever used. But elixir sucks ass for acoustic, they don't last half as long as other coated strings and don't provide the silky smooth slides that they do on electrics.

My advice would be to stay away from elixir on acoustics.

Also for what it's worth, I don't like coated strings. They never sound as good to my ear and don't last as long as straight up Phosphor Bronze.

You can get pro packs with 3 sets

  • my vote is for the john Pearse. That's what I use on my AJ. To my hears they have a warmer sound with better depth. I like the EXPs but they sound the best on my Larrivee guitar
