Black Iodine pellet exists as a diatomic molecule and it is not so soluble in polar water, but
it is very soluble in a covalent liquid called carbon tetrachloride. The latter is not miscible with water and it is denser than water.
When iodine dissolves in carbon tetrachloride, it give a purple (bright violet) solution - as shown by the bottom layer.
