last time i checked racist is not spelled rasist.

and the war was not over slavery, slavery was going to end either way. Abe Lincoln was a major racist as well, after he freed the slaves one thing he wanted to do was deport as many as he could.

The mine part did. The yanks were not supposed to rund straight into the crater. They were supposed to charge around it.

It sure did. Yankee coal miners from Pennsylvania dug a tunnel underneath the Confederate lines and packed it with gunpowder. For once, Hollywood got it right.

Most of the comments I have read deal with everything, but the THE CRATER!
Union Gen Burnside had troops dig a mine under the Confederate fortifications. On the early morning of July 30th, 1864 they lit a fuse and blew the groundworks killing over 300 Confederate soldiers.
However, the Yankees waited too long to start shooting ran down into the crater and it ended up being a "turkey shoot". Over 5,000 Yankee soldiers were killed in this battle. Gen. Ambrose Burnside was relieved of command.

They were the lowest part of Southern society. All humans are a part of "society" if they interact with the main human population of any region. Being a part of society doesn't mean you'll be considered equal.

And I know the North wasn't. It was the fault of Southerners to overreact to Lincoln's election (9 states left before he got into office) and attack a US fort. Slavery may have ended peacefully if they hadn't

And you said that before. I like the charge best when they all hit the wall..

I am sure in 1865 with the end of the war most southerners would have chosen to have never left the union. Of course it was too late then. This movie was not about the causes of the war. This movie does make me think about the hardships everybody went through back then. Everybody, black and white. Just not having indoor plumbing would put a hurting on me. I read once an old man tells a young man so you want to go to war to shoot at somebody? How do you feel about somebody shooting at you?
