Bill Berry was the original drummer, He nearly died in the mid-nineties (brain blood clot I think) and left despite recovering. They have never been the same since. Berry wrote REMs most beautiful song, Perfect Circle (on Murmur)

Bill Berry, now he is a farmer I think. He did play with R.E.M for one last time for their rock and roll hall of fame induction.
