(February 21, 2008) Turkey's ban on women's headscarves kept religious women from attending college. Is the lifting of the ban a liberalization, helping equalize the poor and the rich? Or is it a step on the slippery slope toward Islamization? As Europe continues to mull over Turkey's bid to join the EU, the answer will have serious consequences.

Im sorry it doesn't make any sence, all because of polotics?

The main point is that turkey is classed as a muslim country, they shouldn't even think twice about banning women from wearing head scarfs full stop.

The Uk and even america, which regarded as the most hated country int he world doesn't ban women from banning head scarfs.

Turkey now wants to be classed as a westernised country and wanna disown there own islamic religion.

I feel sorry for the remaining true muslims in turkey

I don't know why TURKEY can't differentiate between secularism and anti-Islaicism, banning scarf is anti-Islamic and not secular, even USA,UK they r not Muslim countries but secular that's why they did not ban scarf b/c doing so is anti-Islamic, not secular and against basic HUMAN RIGHTS.

Oh, and to understand how they got the peoples support to lift the ban read the book snow by Orhan Pamuk. It is about a westernized turkish man with a secular perspective, coming back from Europe to Turkey under a period of politic secularization and westernization not long ago. If it had been like in Europe, where secularization came gradually, Turkey probably would have been like Europe today. Instead those in power at that time tried to suddenly force the western lifestyle on the people.

If turkish women wear veils in their universities then apperently Turkey will not be accepted into the "Christian" Europe.. That means loads of female christian saints and Mary -mother of Jesus if christians has forgotten that- would not be seen as christians in Europe nowadays.

banning scarf is inhumane. telling people what to wear or not to wear is controlling people. What is next? controlling what we eat, drink or listen to

I don't agree they should force women to wear the headscarf. I also don't agree they should force all women not to wear the headscarf. It depends on your level of belief and modesty. They should let women do what they want. Those who don't want to wear it... don't wear it. Those who want to wear it... should be able to wear it.

Honestly it's unfair here in England everyone respects me for wearing the headscarf and everyone is happy with it and there are always a few pessimists as always. But in France there are so many people who don't care whether the woman wears a headscarf or not and Sarkozy are just suiting the needs to the few hateful people who don't like headscarf because they don't even know what it is! it's so unfair....
