I think she took the question in a different context. Instead of "you joined the Marines" (to me, almost implying that she was a Marine), if she would have posed the question that related more to the fact that she was a typist in the armed forces or something to that effect, I believe she would have given a different answer.

Interesting comments... Liberals sometimes serve in the Armed Forces. I know other people who don't like to discuss what/why they did a job, even military service. The world is a lot more interesting than the black & white perceived by the posters here.

Maybe the military records are wrong or maybe they are referring to a different Bea Arthur. I just don't think someone would falsely deny serving honorably in the military. I believe her.

@esiotrot17 -- I respect the fact that you hate war!! Who doesn't?? The problem with a lot of liberals (not necessarily you, I don't know you) is that they can't seem to recognize the difference between loving war and accepting the reality that sometimes war is necessary. I HATE the very concept of war. I've never understood the logic. I finally realized that logic has nothing to do with it. No matter how much we hate it, sometimes evil gets loose in the world and has to be confronted.

No mater her reasons.
I thank her for her service to our nation.

What a weird thing to deny!

She probably denied it due to the fact that in hollywood, liberals hate and detest the people who actually serve. So if she wanted more work she could never say she was once a patriot. How many actors today can Actually say they served our nation in ANY capicity? Even matt damon hates the military but loves to play a soldier in the movies. Hell, how many liberals do you know that served? most libs say THEY KNOW someone who was in the military , never "I " was in. sad but true.

While she strangely denied serving in the armed forces, military records show that the actress Bea Arthur spent 30 months in the Marine Corps, where she was one of the first members of the Women’s Reserve and spent time as a typist and a truck driver.
@chitown1966 liberals don't hate the soldiers, dude, we hate the war. there's a difference.

She obviously had personal reasons for the denial that far out weighed the hard work and dedication she gave ... the interviewer knew that this was a subject she didn't want to talk about immediately when she asked about the war -- Bea tried to dismiss it by saying she was affected by the war the same as everyone and not elaborating any further. Bea knew where this was going and didn't want to have to explain anything about her past ..and thats her right!
