No, I first used a 5-inch hole saw for the outside cut and then went into the same center hole to make the 2-3/4 inch cut.
A Dremel tool sounds like a good idea too if you have an attachment to make circles.

I just did this on plexiglass and went forward. It didn't chip or crack it that's what you were trying to prevent. I also used clamps to hold it down.
I think using a drill press might to more useful if you have one.

I've cut other plexiglass since then and did not experience the problems. I think it was old and may have been exposed to sunlight. Also it was very thin material.

I don't know. It's worth a try but it tends to melt. Thicker material does not seem to chatter so easily

I was able to find 80-mil acrylic at Lowes. I'm going to finish this and test it but Mars1952 has a different approach that I like even better.
I made a drawing of what I perceive his design to be. You can see it on my blog.
I wish YouTube made it easier to insert pictures and blog information directly on our YouTube channels.
