@garfieldturtle Well, it is in fact a deviation of the same roots. In a point between the 8th and 9th century started to appear what we call catalan. A verbal evolution of latin. It has evolved less than spanish, contains more roots and has a strong french and germanic influence, also arabic (all of the invasions that succeded from time to time).

Portuguese resmbles catalan because of the many c/ç/s/ss sounds. Also the structure and verbal constructuion. Yes, they sound pretty alike.
