This song is not about rape or murder, it is a beautiful interpretation of two lovers who cannot be together because therye from different social classes. They choose to die together rather than live apart.

Colin Melloy has said that it's about two lovers who decide to commit suicide together. It's a great folk/pop song with a hook that is not dissimilar to 'Losing My religion'. I love that song and I love this one!

word but I like FighterUnitHopelesses comedy version of it a lot too! get along y'all methodenstreiting storytellers: theres different levels of speaking to variously skittish "cultures" or whatnot. This is definitely not about rape. It's about two people dying in order to get away from the disapproval of their families. It says it in the chorus. "We both go down together". No, it isn't talking about rape. It's talking about dying for someone you love.
