This a video of our baby girl's first birthday. The first birthday for Korean children are the most important and usually celebrated very traditionally. Part of it involves laying out different objects representing different things in life. You allow your child to select one of these objects and the first item they choose is supposed to represent their passion in life (future) or something that relates to/represent what they will do when adults. Our baby had liked books / letters since she was less than a week old so we put out a bible in case she might be attracted to animation but lets see if she still selects it...

  • Thanks. It is fun. The stack of money/bills represent wealth, yarn = long life, rice =health, pencil = studious - these are the basics. You can anything else you like. We added a mirror for fun to rep vanity, a golf ball for sports and a bible to reprent faith in God

  • aw, such a cute baby =3

I was told that I picked the pencil =]

how sad, but my friends and I think that I picked up a pencil since I draw and write so much

by the way, your baby is sOOO cute!

if u need a babysitter i'll be right here! (laughs) I'm joking, I doubt we live anywhere close

Glad to hear you've enjoyed it. Sounds like you have wonderful parents and it's so good that people like yourself care and understand the importance of one's heritage and origin. Love those around you but also where you come from that helps define you!

  • I like this tradition. I think it's cool, kinda wish we do it in the US. What do all the items represent? Is there one for music or something?
