Family, kin hold vigil for slain teen
By CHRIS DOUCETTE, TORONTO SUN
Last Updated: March 5, 2011 8:34pm

Heartbroken family and friends huddled together in a North York apartment Saturday for an emotional vigil in memory of Shane Williams.

But figuring out how to go on without their loved one is next to impossible when they have no idea why the 19-year-old aspiring DJ, who always steered clear of trouble, was gunned down.

"He didn't get into fights," Cameron Holder said of his son." He only wanted to be the best DJ, that's it."

Tears streamed down the distraught dad's face as he looked at the turntables and other equipment he used to teach his boy how to hone his craft in the living room of the family's Jane and Finch area apartment.

Holder, who himself is the head of Asylum Entertainment and one of Toronto's top DJs, said he never thought his son could become a victim of such violence.

Pointing out numerous motivational phrases on the walls of the apartment, he said his son was passionate about music and extremely talented.

"If ever he was DJing and there was a problem, if he felt uncomfortable, he'd call me, even at two in the morning, and I'd pick him up," Holder said.

"I still can't believe this," the grief-stricken father added.

Toronto Police say they still have more questions than answers in the case and they are anxious for witnesses to come forward, especially anyone who rode the TTC with Williams Wednesday night.

The teen left Jane station on the northbound 55 Warren Park bus at 8:44 p.m. and sat at the back, Det.-Sgt. Gary Giroux said.

Williams left the bus at 8:56 p.m. near his home and it's thought he was gunned down moments later in a drive-by.

Investigators believe as many as four people were in a small hatch-back, possibly a VW Golf or a Honda, and someone got Williams' attention and then opened fire on him.

"I just don't understand why someone would do something like this," said Tya, one of Williams' three siblings. "It's beyond my comprehension."

Williams also leaves behind his stepmom, Veronica, his other sister, Jordana, and his little brother, Zachary.

"We need people to start talking," family friend and crime victim advocate Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo said. "This is unacceptable."

"It's the fifth young black man to die in three weeks," she added.

Police are urging potential witnesses to come forward and in a rare move they released images of specific people who may be able to help solve the teen's murder.

Anyone with information is urged to call Giroux directly at 416-808-7387, or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
