  • Anyone know if alto is written in Bass or Treble clef? I'm thinking the alto is a great way to start my son on Reg Trombone ..

  • @millfred123 The alto written in alto clef, so I think the best starting and easier way, the normal tenor trombone. If he is so little, may starting on euphonium/bariton horn and change later to trombone.

    Best regards. :)

  • @FourtissimoFan Okay, next question ... are the notes the same .... in other words 1st position Bb, 6th, C, etc ... so he could learn Bass Clef and just play it an octave higher?

  • @millfred123 The notes in different positions and the whole slide is shorter like on the regular tenor trombone. 1st is Eb the 6th is Bb. This is 4notes higher and more harder to play on it. So for the beginners have to start with a normal trombone or euphonium.

    Bye.

  • @julietrombone I was just thinking, what about writing special music that doesnt go below middle C#/Db. I'm assuming positions 6 and 7 are the ones they have trouble with ... then as they get older they can learn the lower notes.

  • @millfred123 maybe you could start your son on a pbone... its a plastic trombone same size as the normal one, and it cost about 150$ and not as fragile as the brass ones... I teach to kids and we start them on normal trombone... until 7 years old they have have difficulties to reach all the position and then they are fine... you can buy them easily online just google pbone. they are even some video on youtube about them

  • Thanks for the input EB. We're both correct but I believe sackbutt is more commonly used. Regardless, it's a nifty little tool.

  • @seapeaare, 15th century spelling was inconsistent. This is from the wikipedia page on the Sackbut: "The term survives in numerous English spelling variations including sacbut, sackbutte, sagbut, shagbolt, sacabushe and shakbusshe."

  • Excellent rendition, candenza and tone on this SackBUTT. Notice the correct spelling of this 15th century instrument.

  • Beautiful sound! : )
