You know it took me forever to figure out who Bush and Blair reminded me of but i think i finally got it, they remind me of the Thompson twins out of the TinTin cartoons, weird huh?.

@alecifitation The kid that plays chess is the next series Shan wrote after Cirque Du Freak called The Demonata. It's about a kid seeing real demons and he has to conquer them with his gift of magic. The Thin Executioner is just a book itself, not in the series.
