To clear things up: this is a "Lazarus Taxon." That is to say, a species or taxon that disappears from one or more periods of the fossil record, only to appear again later. Arguably, the most famous of this is the modern form of the Coelacanth. Look up "Lazarus Taxon" on Wikipedia for more.
