This video features Norfolk Southern woodchip train 66E as it traverses the combined Sipping and Switching Society of North Carolina and Ohio Valley Sipping and Switching Society HO scale modular layout at the NMRA Piedmont Division train show on March 13th and 14th. This weekend was the first time that the two groups combined modules into one layout. Prior to this weekend, these modules had never been within 500 miles of each other, but they were 100% compatible!

The train features two atlas Dash-8 series locomotves and one Blueline SD40-2, all with DCC and Sound, and the cars are by LBF, Huberts, and Walthers. I followed the train around about half of the layout, and the names of the individual modules are displayed before each clip. Also featured are meets with five other trains on the double main line.

I would like to thank Joe Balint and Rick Mattar for contributing some cars to the train.

Sorry about some of the wobbling, I don't have a tripod and was also controling the train at the same time. There is also some background noise, but it can't be but so quiet inside a train show! Enjoy!

  • Very nice video. Where is this at in NC?

  • @justkiddin08 The group is from all over NC, from Boone to Whiteville and many places in between. We also have group members from Georgia, and the sister group Ohio Valley Sipping and Switching Society. We don't have a permanent location, we set up at shows whenever we can.

  • @ARandall70 thanks forthe info ill see what i can do about finding these cars. my walthers order for the 2 7000 cubic ft chip hopper came in today and i was very impressed. i cannot wait to get a full train a going, one more question, did you use model or "real" chip loads? i try to run most of my trains with real loads, as a matter of fact all of my coal trains are fully loaded Woodland scenics ground coal loads. though it may be money im spending its worth the realism.

  • @tftrainman All of these cars have real chips in them, but they are glued to a block of wood. I cant imagine the mess these wood chips would make if they were loose. But the top layer is all real chips and you get that true-to-life wood chip smell. The fact that we set this layout up on friday and take it down sunday makes live loads a real mess. On a home layout or anywhere the cars stay on the track a long time, I think live loads are awesome, especially if you have operating loaders/dumpers.

  • i noticed some of the chip cars used were from walthers, i just ordered some of those however i have been looking all over for the ones with the twin tub bottoms on them, any idea who makes them or where i can order them? any info would be very nice. also nice video, i live in western nc and i get to see 66e alot coming in to bring chips to the paper mill.

  • @tftrainman The twin bathtub wood chip gons were originally made by LBF company, which is now defunct. The changed to the name Hubert's model RR manufacturing. You can still find these cars on eBay from time to time. I was lucky to find a person selling two lots of 10 cars for $100 each. At the time I was the only bidder, but since I bought mine ive noticed demad is way up for these cars.

  • im in the sipping and switching society sadly i cant do anything with the group because theyre all to far away from were i live in NC ):

  • Very nice!!!

  • @ARandall70 yes they can make a mess i discovered that first hand when a 15 car NS bethgon coal train of mine hit a messed up rail joint and jumped the tracks sending powdered coal EVERYWHERE. i would love to find a a way to make alot of HO accesories operate, especially mine loaders, rotary dumpers and conveyors. but id sure love to know how to get ahold of those hoppers. i searched ebay and found one but it was already sold

  • @dcalcutt Yeah it would have been nice to have, but oh well. It was the first video I ever shot and I'm happy enough with how it turned out. Since this was taken I've purchased a tripod and have upgraded to 720p, and will start 1080p next time I go railfanning. Perhaps i'll reshoot this video again in the future.
