I have to repeat Byron Danelius, and it's sort of another way to look at the same issue: "Religion provides the solace for the turmoil that it creates."
And no, procreation is not and was never a requirement to be considered a family. Unless you're going to tell everyone with adopted children that they aren't a family. Which would just be dumb.
