There used to be three Hornbill species in Singapore until they all became extinct from the island state in the 19th century due to rapid development. We are now seeing a revival of one species, the Oriental Pied Hornbill or Anthracoceros albirostris. This species may have flown in from Malaysia and made its home in Pulau Ubin, an island off mainland Singapore. The Singapore Hornbill Project has helped increase numbers of these birds from 20 in 2004 to about 50 now, most of which live on Pulau Ubin though a few have been sighted in Changi and other parts of mainland Singapore.

I was lucky to find a flock of these amazing and fascinating birds during my recent trip to Pulau Ubin. Without my tripod, it was hard to keep a steady hand on zoom mode, but these birds offered me some precious glimpses of themselves which I would love share with the world.
