At the time America was going through its worst economic crisis, Franklin Delano Roosevelt seemed to offer a natural talent for leadership. This film shows how that charismatic quality appealed so much when America lacked direction and vitality. The film also traces the steps Roosevelt took to create a larger federal bureaucracy than had ever existed. Henry Fonda narrates. Part of the "American Parade" series originally produced for CBS News, a set of documentaries about America's history and heritage that features such topics as American presidents, the Industrial Revolution, Walt Whitman and American poetry, Boss Tweed and city government corruption, the settling of Kansas, the American womens movement, and civil rights. 30 minutes, black and white.

@spankeydmonkey That fool Jimmy Carter and his policies were the worst thing to happen to this country since FDR. The only consolation for Carter is we may now finally have a president that is even worse than he was.

FYI: While this documentary is narrated by Henry Fonda, it was actually written by "60 Minutes" commentator Andy Rooney. In Rooney's book "Pieces of My Mind," he writes about working with Fonda during its making.

To bttalbot- Hell this country wasen't even trading with China until Nixon went over there. Then Sam Walton(Wal-Mart) went over and the loss of American jobs and Corporations began, The flood Gates opened and most went to China. Then India, and the Pacific rim islands. To add Insult to Injury the GOP voted itself Monstorous tax breaks and moved the Corporate offices offshore. Now they ask. "WHERE ARE ALL THE JOBS?" Rotten Bastards that they are. They know damned well were all the jobs are!
