the sequel comic 'shattered visage' has an explanation to this episode- the whole thing was a drug - induced hallucination by no. 6, no. 6 was number one and he never escaped- he was still a captive and under observation in a london-sized 'village'

actually much as i/we like this episode it was apparently dashed off and considered terrible by all connected with the series, including McGoohan whose family's lives were threatened by an enraged British public due to disappointment.

I hate the new prisoner series. Too much drama and he has a girlfriend? What is this? #6 never had a girlfriend in the original series.
