Don & friends (Rege, Bill, Jimmy, and Molly Cat) show how to build the 10' long, Robert Morris-inspired recovery-style kayak known as the "Toibote". From computer to finished kayak, this little play boat is easy to build, and a blast to paddle. Check out my "Building Skin-on-frame Boats" by Robert Morris, if you'd like to build a kayak like this.

  • nice work and well done video. Can you tell me if the kayac is your own design, or from avilable plans?

    Thanks,

    Jim

  • Hi Jim -

I got the specs for this kayak from Robert Morris's book, "Building Skin-on-Frame Boats". Morris shows how to build it "traditional-style", while I went with non-traditional methods. But... it's basically the same boat.

  • i don't know anything about kayaking, but COOL KAYAK ... btw, whats that blue thing you're wearing around your waist ?

  • Hello, Dark One -

Thanks! The blue thing is called a "spray skirt". It fits tightly around your waist, and a bungee holds it to the cockpit of the kayak. If a wave breaks over the deck of the kayak, it keeps the water out. A skilled kayaker can turn the kayak upside down, and then turn it right-side-up, without getting any water inside. That's the function of the spray skirt.

  • btw- awesome song for this video!!! the sea is calling me too

  • Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson - I listened to this song often, while putting the little kayak together.

  • Jimmy buffet said he always dreamed of singing with Lightfoot. I hope he gets that wish soon .

  • Please email me your website @ mofojo420533@yahoo.com. I just came upon a thirty plus year old kayak like what you built and it needs new skin and it is small for my size but I would like to build one like yours I have ? S for you!!!! I love your kayak very neat

  • Parabéns pelo trabalho. No Brasil não temos essa possibilidade por falta de literatura.

  • I have a couple questions. 1: What's the advantage to having a "surf kayak"? Just for fun? 2: How did you get the inner frame cutouts? 3: How long did it take you to build?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

  • can I ask what those tabs are for ?

  • nice work
