MEXICO CITY, Mexico, 27 October 2009 In an event that launched the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child here, award-winning singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas has been appointed as a UNICEF Mexico National Ambassador.
Ms. Venegas began studying music when she was eight years old. She has won several Grammy Awards and six MTV Video Music Awards. Her appointment as a UNICEF National Ambassador reflects the commitment she has shown by participating in a number of UNICEF initiatives in Mexico.
In 2007, Ms. Venegas, together with other celebrities, supported the Gifts from the Heart campaign to mobilize public opinion in support of child rights. In 2008 and 2009, she visited the northern and southern border regions of Mexico to speak out about the situation of unaccompanied migrant children and the work being done to protect them.
It is a great honour for me to have been appointed a UNICEF ambassador and to be able to take part in such a worthy undertaking. I believe that what UNICEF achieves is very important, and I am very excited to be part of this effort, even if it is a modest contribution, said Ms. Venegas.
