Here's a song I wrote shortly after the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl for the first time. It's performed here by Mike Agranoff, Jim King, and Andy Koenig at the Minstrel Coffeehouse in New Jersey, July 2008. They've updated my reference to the Patriots as payback after the New York Giants defeated the Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl.

The song is a parody of a traditional English Christmas song that I learned from a recording of Nowell Sing We Clear. Their version:

I'll sing you twelve, o
Green grow the rushes, o
What is your twelve, o
Twelve for the twelve apostles
Eleven for the eleven who went to heaven
And ten for the Ten Commandments
Nine for the nine bright shiners
Eight for the April rainers
Seven for the seven stars in the sky
And six for the six proud walkers
Five for the symbols at your door
And four for the gospel makers
Three, three, the rivals
Two, two, the lily white boys
Clothed all in green, o
One is one and all alone
And evermore shall be so

  • What's the name of the original song because I keep getting Burns (so to speak!)...I know the lyrics went - One is one and all alone and ever more shall be so...

  • @ofdoubtsandgod "Green Grow the Rushes O" is the refrain of the original, though I'm not sure that's the title (insofar as anybody knows the "real" title of a traditional song). Burns also wrote a song with that refrain and title, and a related melody.
