Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of children. It is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children learn in rooms prepared for them, called atria, which contain materials that they use to draw near to God.
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia has offered two Level I atria for children ages 3-6 since 2008, and will be offering a Level II atrium for children ages 6-9 beginning in the fall of 2010.
In preparation for the opening of this atrium, St. Stephen's recently hosted a Level II training workshop. Led by Anna Hurdle, one of the premier Catechesis trainers in the world, the training included participants of different Christian denominations from across the United States and Canada.
St. Stephen's will host a Level I training led by Anna Hurdle over a period of several months, a weekend at time, beginning in August of 2010. For details and registration information, visit www.saintstephensrichmond.net/levelone.
