Alpine Loop 1 - Cinnamon Pass

The first part of our Alpine Loop adventure 2007. Starting at Silverton, Colorado, we head up to the famous ghost town of Animas Forks on our way to Cinnamon Pass (part of the Alpine Loop) deep in the spectacular San Juan mountains. We reach the summit of Cinnamon Pass then it's off to American Basin in part 2.

Around 1983 or 1984, my Parents and I took a 1971 Ford F-250 4X4 factory highboy over Cinnamon Pass. We came from the north down to Silverton. There were stretches on the north side (As I recall) where my Dad would pull in the driver's side mirror and I'd look out the passenger side and give him the remaining road in inches. Had to multi-point turn the truck around some of those switchbacks. Pretty dicey as I remember. Beautiful though. Are the ore carts still at the top of the saddle?

You guys are living my dream. Maybe some day i can get there to show my wife how beautiful Co. is. Colorado is very close and dear to my heart, i think is the most beautiful place in the whole world.

I went from lake city to silverton via cinnamon in a 4x4 silverado with a service bed on it. Made it fine. Nice easy trail. A friend was visiting from out of state and I wanted to impress him after work lol

I am so ticked that I have not gotten to go to Colorado in forever... we would always go for 4th of July, but then my sister got married, so that ruined a year.... then the years that followed, gas was to high.... I really miss Kyte Lake, and the Chipmunks!!!!

Thanks for the video. It was great to see the place that I splent my summers.

As a kid, my dad would pack us up & drive from L.A. We'd stay right across from that sign that splits the road to Amer. Basin and Cinnamon Pass.

It was nothing more than a wide spot in the road back then, that was surrounded by beaver ponds. At night the beavers would slap their tails on the water and scare the heck out of me and my sister.

Those ponds are probably gone by now, and a big meadow replaces them.

I just went up this trail to 149 with a Dodge Ram 3/4 ton diesel 6 spd. The truck is a stock 4x4 suspension-wise. I am running a bit bigger than stock tire. 295-70R-17 Toyo MT's. It was a fun ride. I got to Animas Forks via Hurricane pass...I believe. It wasn't the easier trail from Silverton. I do know Corkscrew trail was one of the trails off the one I took.

Really appreciate you posting, Dave. But I have a question: Cinnamon Pass looks so easy! I was under the impression that I should not take my pickup over it, but am I wrong? Maybe it's stickier than it looks? Was the other side, going toward Lake City much worse than the Silverton side?

Thanks so much for this video (as well as the other videos in your Alpine Loop series). It really helps me to plan my upcoming vacation alot easier by actually seeing how the roads are in that area.
