Amy Winehouse nasceu numa área suburbana de Southgate, Londres, numa família judia de quatro elementos com tradição musical ligada ao jazz. Seu pai, Mitchell Winehouse, era motorista de táxi e sua mãe, Janis, farmacêutica. Amy tem ainda um irmão mais velho, Alex Winehouse.
Cresceu no subúrbio de Southgate e fez os estudos na instituição de ensino Ashmole School. Por volta dos dez anos, Winehouse funda uma banda amadora - e de curta vida útil - de rap chamada "Sweet 'n' Sour, as Sour". Ela descreveu a banda como sendo "the little white Jewish Salt 'n' Pepa" ("a pequena Salt 'n' Pepa judaica").
Ganhou a sua primeira guitarra elétrica aos 13 anos de idade e por volta dos 16 anos já cantava profissionalmente ao lado de um amigo (depois namorado), o cantor de soul Tyler James.
Amy passou a infância e parte de sua adolescência presenciando os abusos de seu pai perante sua mãe. Numa entrevista a uma TV inglesa, o pai da cantora revelou que em 1983 iniciou um caso com uma colega de trabalho, que se tornou sua esposa em 1996. "Amy e seu irmão sabiam disso e presenciavam o sofrimento da mãe. Eles chamavam-na de 'a mulher do papai no trabalho'", afirmou ele em entrevista. Na canção "What It Is About Men" a cantora se refere a o que sua mãe teve de passar e ao comportamento de "homem de família" do próprio pai.

Any kid who is 3 years old knows what a human body looks like. Get over your repressed selves, there is no "porn" on here, every nude was an art shot. Did it ever occur to any of you that sexual repression is where sexual dysfunction starts? They have nude commercials in Europe, it is only the USA that is so prudish.
