This video is of the Planes of Fame Museum's very own late-1930s Seversky AT-12. This is the two-seat trainer version of the Seversky P-35 fighter. This aircraft was part of the 52-aircraft order placed by Sweden in the late 1930s. An embargo was placed on export of U.S.-made aircraft to foreign countries except Britain in June 1940. Only two of the AT-12s were received by Sweden before the embargo went into effect.
The remaining aircraft were sold to the U.S. Army Air Corps and it is believed that they were used mainly as fast transport aircraft by stateside USAAF base commanders during WWII. The Planes of Fame example was used by the base commander of Lowry Army Airfield near Denver, Colorado.
Seversky Aircraft became Republic Aviation in 1939 and subseqently produced the P-43 Lancer and the famous P-47 Thunderbolt. The similarity of the basic design concept between the AT-12/P-35, the P-43 and the P-47 can be well seen.
Talk about rare! This AT-12 is the only one flying in the world and is powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 14-cylinder engine.
Thanks!
Wow, that bare metal finish and 1930's streamlining, it's just breathtaking.
