The Outdoor Learning Lab on Long Island, NY is working with students and teachers to try reintroducing bobwhite quail, an important species to the ecosystem that has gone extirpated in the last 10 years. We are trying to restablish a population in order to reduce the tick population.

  • I WAS THERE!!! FOR MY SISTER

  • @MrMrJETS Thanks for commenting! You were here on Long Island?

  • Large numbers froze to death during the 70's. In fact, I've never seen a Quail in West Virginia, except at a restaurant on my plate. What we've done is we have planted several acres in wheat, rye, and, later, oats; we have set up feeders. They have access to low lying shrubbery. However, the birds will be coming from the subtropical parts of their range, and this part of WV has a much harsher climate than Long Island.

  • You might try purchasing quail from a breeder in northern latitudes, such as Pennsylvania, Michagan, Iowa, etc... those will be Northern Bobwhite Quail and have a higher tolerance for harsh winters.

  • Watched your video after witnessing the release last week at Caleb Smith State Park. Just curious, are there similar programs at other state parks in the region? This could seriously help with the tic problem on the east end of long island. Nancy Petschauer

  • This is the only conservation project that I am aware of... although I am interested in making this a "program" model... just need volunteer help, marketing, and lots of funding! I agree... this, and other restorative conservation projects, could revitalize our ecosystem thereby helping our own human species.

  • @insectivore2 Yeah I remember you saying this will be posted on youtube as BWQ. It was really fun hatching

  • I WAS THERE!!!

  • My family and I are trying to reintroduce them to our farm in West Virginia, where they also have disappeared. They didn't survive some bad winters we had here.

  • I think some good marketing could really help. Surely there must be a way to get the word out through the state park system?
