I open and read the document I discovered in Loose Ends 3. Written in 1985, I was trying to explain the reason I was going to quit playing the harpsichord as a career. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJRMp-KKQsQ
I love your playing ,I looked through Wanda Landowska's book I had her albums in the 70s I love the video of her life. I heard Leonhart in LA live, It was great. I went to
2 concerts of Igor Kipnis 30 years apart I'll never forget them .
to me you are a wonderful Artist so unique I know I'm lucky to see your videos.
The "earlier than thou" baroque fascists have had a decidedly adverse effect on "authentic performance". That is, the participation of the soul and human experience in a great work whose "completion" depends upon these. There is a glaring "fear factor" in the playing of too many practitioners of "older" music who are terrified of "getting it wrong" so they take no risks, resulting in lifeless playing. It's time for people to wake up. 40 years after the fact is better than not waking up at all.
Poignant. I am well acquainted with the current early music movement and even now that attitude of 'study comes first and performance comes second' still exists, although it is probably relaxing. I completely agree with you in that letter. First comes MUSIC and music communication. Let treatises be no more than and aid, don't let them rule!
Gosh. There seems to be no end to the bits and pieces I learn from you. I have thought some of the exact things you point out in your letter regarding my own visual art career. I am not sure some things have changed all that much since 1985 in some ways. However, you are correct. We now have YouTube and other aspects of technology that allow us more freedom! :-)
The fashion of musical interpretation does change from time to time. Often the discussions are not about quality but about what is en vogue. The approach to music (esp "old" music) was very intellectual and dogmatic in the 70ies and 80ies. But music is too powerful to get captured by some strict academists.
I once sat in the great hall at Hatfeild house, and played the Harpsicord from Spirit, even though I had never played one before. There were visitors there, but I lost myself just moving my fingers over the keys...and it was heaven. I was told it was beautiful, it was just 10 minutes of pure bliss for me!
One does get fed up with the establishment, and the need to break free!
You Are Loved!!!! You Are Respected...We APPRECIATE YOU!!!!!! Your document touched on many thoughts I have presently about my own life...THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!!!!
