This is part 1 of an in-depth look at one of the many ways industrial bands in the Aggrotech, Terror EBM, and Harsh Electro genres get their vocal sound. The key (as mentioned in my previous video) is Pitch Shifting, and this video will cover the use of the BOSS SE-50 effects unit for Pitch Shifting. Also featured is the BOSS SE-70. Both of these processors are well known for being used by popular industrial and black metal bands (Psyclon Nine comes to mind, along with Agonoize, and tons of other bands).

Part 2 features a little bit of actual vocal effects. Part 1 is all about editing the parameter settings.

Be forewarned that you should not over-use this effect, as many have already gone before you and done just that! You will be scorned for using this effect, but if you like it, I say go ahead and have some fun!

  • how much would this cost?

  • @XxsugarinjectionsxX the BOSS effects units are anywhere from 75 to 200 dollars on ebay. Check Craigslist too.

  • Mode 1 is for fast pitch shifting but not precise

Mode 2 is for average speed shifting but more precise

Mode 3 is for slow shifting but precise

  • @cowboytonydee Thanks! I was wondering about those. I lost the manuals! So Modes actually are quite useful for setting up pitch shifting in a live setting, depending on how precise you want it. Good to know!

  • Well man, not bad, but Nero also used simple flanger/phaser with high harsh vocal.

  • I watched both videos and set my SE-50 as explained but it's not really getting the Dawn Of Ashes/Psyclon Nine sound i'm after :/ any tips?

  • I have a vocal 300 and there is a pitch shift option but it doesnt look like from what I can see that you can have 4 pitches running at once like you can with this hardware. Does anyone know?

  • Man, I wish I can afford that kind of stuff...well, thanks anyway for showing this. This really gave me some answers to my curiosity. :D

  • @lotusboy101 enough to put me in the poor house TT-TT

  • @lotusboy101 I have one, but I don't like the sound of the pitch shifter at all... The pitch shifter tracking is good, but it sounds as if there is a tremolo at hight speed or something on it. Actually, I didn't find a great pitch shifter yet, even in DAWs like Logic.
