England's "Polly Brown" Had One Of The Earliest Pre-Disco Songs On The Radio. It's A Fun, Catchy Dance Tune That Was Actually Bigger In The USA Than In The UK. Superb Production & Outstanding Vocals Make "Up In A Puff Of Smoke" A Winner.

  • Mike, I think that Polly.Brown sounded very close to a young diana ross....this song actually has the heart of a mid 60s supremes song( no idea of which one) in it

    had the supremes lasted beyound the early 70s...

    this record may have been a hit hit for them

    Whatare your thoughts?

  • @Freyja1133 ---I agree. This could have been a hit for the Supremes!

  • Hey Mike;

    As a former deejay, I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your videos. Nice presentations. I especially like the Polly Brown posts. She is simply fab!

    P.S. Love Northern Soul such as the Flirtations.

  • @nelson0535 ----- From one DJ to another...thanks much!

  • musicmike2 Do you have the actual footage of the performing artist singing this song in your archives? You could do us all a great service if you could upload the original footage of Polly Brown singing this upbeat song from 1975!

  • @farwayout ---- I do not have original footage. Sorry.

  • Pre-disco? The first #1 disco record in the U.S. was The Hues Corporation's "Rock The Boat" which carted seven months before this single debuted the week of January 4. 1975. And there were lesser disco hits before that. Regardless, this is a great track. Polly continues to write and record today (2012) on her own label, sometimes under the name "Polly Browne."

  • Great posting Mike! This old favourite has a timeless quality about it. Could easily be popular in todays market with minimal reworking.

  • I always thought that Polly in her Pickettywitch days sounded a lot like Dionne Warwick. On this track, though, se sounds uncannily like Jean Terrell! Either way - a phenomenal talent.

  • what a great gal , thanks for posting

  • Goin' up up up up up up~

    Lol, I like it.

    PUFF of smoke!

  • D'ya know Mike, I was gonna suggest u feature a Polly Brown number & here u go... AMAZING! She has had a very interesting career. She courted controversy when she "blacked up" for her Sweet Dreams number "Honey Honey" on Uk's Top of the Pop's pop show back in '74. She also had several entries in the UK Eurovision Song For Europe heats in 1976. A song that I would really love you to feature is "(It's Like A) Sad Old Kinda Movie" when she sang with the group Pickettywitch. A UK #16 chart hit! :)
